PEACE 2.0 (Providing Explanations and Analysis for Combating Hate Expressions)
Elena Cabrio (Chairholder) & Greta Damo (former IA Cluster 3IA Côte d’Azur PhD student)

The increasing volume of hate speech on online platforms poses significant societal challenges. While the Natural Language Processing community has developed effective methods to automatically detect the presence of hate speech, responses to it, called counter-speech, are still an open challenge. We present PEACE 2.0, a novel tool that, besides analysing and explaining why a message is considered hateful or not, also generates a response to it.

3:00 pm to 6:00 pm
The Secret Code of the Nose: 400 Receptors for a Universe of Flavors
Edoardo Sarti (Researcher at Inria, alongside Chairholder Frederic Cazals)

Strawberries, coffee, basil: what we call “taste” actually comes largely from our sense of smell. To detect odors, our body uses around 400 different sensors called olfactory receptors. They form the largest family of genes in our genome. Each odor molecule activates several receptors at once, and each receptor can recognize several molecules: the brain reads this combination like a barcode. With 400 receptors, we can create more combinations than there are atoms in the universe. And because these receptors vary from one person to another, no two people experience exactly the same world of smells.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4

10:00 am to 1:00 pm
Cardiac Digital Twin: Preventing Sudden Cardiac Death
Demo by Buntheng Ly (Postdoctoral Researcher at Inria, Epione team, alongside Chairholder Maxime Sermesant)

1:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Survival Stories: How to Teach Your Immune System to Fight Again
Giulia Foroni (IA Cluster 3IA Côte d’Azur PhD student, Olivier Humbert’s Chair)

Your immune system can already recognise and kill cancer cells, until a tumour learns to switch that recognition off. Survival Stories shows how doctors turn it back on, turning the real survival-analysis research behind that process into a hands-on science exhibit for all ages. Visitors can challenge their knowledge through a series of interactive games, from ranking the biological factors that matter most for a given treatment, to reading a survival curve, to stepping into a doctor's shoes to choose a treatment for a simulated patient with metastatic lung cancer.
