On April 8th, Marc-Olivier Gauci, 3IA Fellow, was invited by Yann Bubien, Director General of the Agence Régionale de Santé (ARS), to speak at the “Colloque : les rencontres de l'IA”, held at the Campus du Pharo.

He intervened in a dual capacity: as principal investigator of the RHU ReBone project and as a representative of 3IA Côte d'Azur, reflecting the close alignment between both initiatives in advancing AI-driven solutions for musculoskeletal health.

A strategic data infrastructure for the region

A central topic of the symposium was the Entrepôt de Données de Santé Méditerranée (EDS Méditerranée), which is set to become the primary, and eventually the sole, channel for extracting patient health data in the PACA region. This regional initiative aligns with the broader European agenda, particularly the European Health Data Warehouse, scheduled to be operational by 2028, underscoring the strategic importance of harmonised health data governance at scale.

Bridging innovation and clinical practice

The symposium also addressed the challenges surrounding the deployment of AI-powered medical devices in real-world clinical settings. Beyond regulatory and technical hurdles, the transition from innovation to routine use raises significant questions of acceptability, both among clinical teams and patients, as well as the practical integration of these tools into day-to-day workflows.

A thriving regional ecosystem

From an ecosystem perspective, the PACA region demonstrates a strong and growing dynamic. High-level clinical and research teams are collaborating on targeted disease areas: cardiovascular pathologies, through the work of Prof. Alexis Jacquet (Radiologist, AP-HM) and Maxime Sermesant (3IA Chairholder), and osteoarticular disorders, led by Marc-Olivier Gauci from CHU-IULS and Inserm-ICARE. These collaborations aim at developing digital models with translational potential.

The AI Cluster 3IA Côte d'Azur provides institutional support to these initiatives, several of which have secured funding through highly competitive calls for proposals under the France 2030 framework, including the PEPR Santé Numérique and RHU programmes.
